Biology Class, In Living Color
My five still-at-home kids are outside by the fruit trees, armed with a tape measure, a camera, and an encyclopedia, gathered around the biggest non-Galapagos turtle I think I've ever seen.
This is home schooling.
At its best : )
Rest assured, pictures will show up on someone's blog or Facebook page. Stay tuned.

Of Books, Busy-ness, and Babies
Just thought I'd post, partly to justify my absence of late! And partly to share good news, which I think everyone knows!
So here's why I am so busy!
Caitlin is trying so hard to finish school. At the same time we are jumping through relentless hoops for college, in the hopes of getting in before deadlines and getting her there for fall. She's not quite sure yet about even going. But we are jumping through the hoops so she'll be ready!
Scholarship stuff, FAFSA stuff (still), college visits & calls, essays, finishing high school courses, community college work, stepping over stuff in a house that refuses in places to get clean and in other places to stay clean, and of course...
...trying to find time to also help four others with their school, AWANA work (failing there), Scouts work (ditto), while checking sugars, getting assorted dear people to Volleyball, college courses, doctors, you name it. Getting the dogs to the vet & groomed, although that would be in the category of things that are NOT getting done at all!
Trying to find a few hours to sleep. Not so successful there.
And the easier stuff: a new grandbaby. So thankful she's here. I plan to write a post about her soon. She and her brother are such a breath of spring in our lives.
I haven't seen her much yet, but we are working on that. Hopefully tomorrow.
So there you have it. All my excuses. Okay, the ones I have time to think about. No end in sight, but if things slow down a little, maybe I'll get back to posting!
Too tired for pictures; maybe later! (There are baby pictures posted elsewhere, like Facebook. If you haven't seen them, just trust me for now: beautiful. A work of art. And I am blessed to know the Artist. He is so Good.)

Gotta Love 'Em
I love this family. They are so funny and such fun. I love being home with them. I have heard rumors that these kids will all grow up and leave us some day, but I refuse to believe it.
It would help if the older three had taken seriously their roles as good examples and stayed home forever. They could have just brought their wives on board, and eventually the babies. The more the merrier. How come they don't see it my way?
Dear, sweet Grace. This afternoon she asked me if I was on my diet today. (This is not my favorite question, and the kids never seem to ask it on the days I AM on my diet.) I told her no, but I will be tomorrow. She looked at me in all seriousness, her big eyes trusting mine to teach her how life works, and asked, "So that's how you do it? You have to take turns like that?"
: D
Today (the 22nd... it is past midnight now, so I am clarifying) was Strider's birthday. He is one, and so now he is grown up. No more of the following:
Emptying the bathroom trash.
Digging in the yard when it rains.
Chewing up toys.
Chewing up pencils.
Jumping on people.
Accidents in the house (there are not real frequent but are nonetheless annoying).
Generally teaching Stormie to be a dog. She didn't know many annoying dog habits before he came along.
There are a few more things, but he needs to work on those for now. He has a week. (Yeah, right.)
Isaiah was so tired he fell asleep on the couch tonight. Too cute, the little sleeping cherub. I finally picked him up to carry him to his bed, and he immediately sort of half woke up and said, " Brush my teeth... I didn't brush my teeth."
I love when my kids are so conscientious.
Like when Sam, who is thirteen, asked me if he could do some school today (it's Sunday). Yep, he did. Let's see if he asks tomorrow.....
Speaking of sleepy kids, Grace often asks at night if we can wake her up early the next morning, so she can get her school done early. (Note: the school rarely gets done early, but she has good intentions.) Yesterday morning (yep, it was Saturday, but sometimes we do school on Saturdays), Grace had ended up in our bed and was sleeping beside me. I was awake and was snuggling up to her, when she opened her eyes, looked at me, and asked quite seriously, "Can you wake me up now?"
Then she just closed her eyes again.
Funny girl.
"Can I wake you up now?" I asked, making sure I'd heard her right.
She kept her eyes closed, looked asleep, and nodded.
Here's a picture of our three youngest sweethearts. Bethany took it a little over a year ago, and I love it. I seldom seem to post pictures of my family anymore, but maybe you'd like to see the faces of some of these people I go on and on about!
Kids. Such a fun way to start the morning.
Such a fun way to end the day.
But if you've figured out how to convince them that the day is done and it's time to sleep, please let me know!

From the Mouths of Babes....
Life is never, never dull with little ones around.
With a diabetic, hearing-impaired eight year old and a sitting-still-impaired : ) six-year-old, life is always lively and full of surprises.
Here is a taste:
Several weeks ago, we were on the way home from somewhere and had some candy in the van, which the kids wanted. I told them everyone had to wait until we got home and checked Grace's sugar to see if she could have a little. After a while I pretty much forgot about the candy.
But Isaiah didn't (of course). Almost as soon as we got home, as I was settling in and probably putting things away, I noticed Isaiah, perched up on a bar stool at the island, with Grace's sugar testing gear all unzipped, loaded with a test strip and ready to use. "Grace," he called out with all seriousness and not much patience, "we need some blood here!"
About a week ago, Virus Number Two of Winter 2008-2009 was finally waning in its assault on my children, but I was still in the mode of trying to find the thermometer and take another temperature. I'd just found it and was washing it off at the kitchen sink, which did not escape Isaiah's notice.
Isaiah: "Mom, it's already clean. I put it in the dog's mouth, but then I washed it really well."
Last night:
Grace: "Is Jesus really the King of the Jewels?"
(And yes, Dear, He really is.)
